Once the installation of Mathematica is complete, upon first launching it you will be presented with the Wolfram Product Activation dialog. There are three methods to activate Mathematica: online activation, manual activation, and connecting to a license server running an appropriate version of MathLM. If you have not yet installed Mathematica, please see 'Installing Mathematica'.
The default method of activation is online activation. The other activation methods are accessed via the Other ways to activate button.

Activation Key

Online and manual activation both require an activation key. When you purchase Mathematica, you are provided with this key. If you purchased a hard copy of the software, the activation key is provided with your license agreement card or the installation CD. If you downloaded the software online, the key is provided via email.

Alternatively, you may access keys for registered products through the Wolfram User Portal (https://user.wolfram.com). To access your activation key, begin by logging in with your Wolfram ID and Password.
Once logged in, navigate to the My Products and Services tab. In this section you will find a table that lists your Wolfram products.
Select the Mathematica product of interest from this table and you will be directed to a page that contains your activation key for this product.
This is the easiest and recommended way to activate Mathematica for most users. The only requirement is that your computer is connected to the internet.
In the field provided, enter your activation key and click the Activate button. The Wolfram Systemwill then automatically generate a Math ID and retrieve a password online through a web service. This process is fully automated and upon successful activation Mathematica will launch.
If the machine on which you are using Mathematica does not have an internet connection, or if you are experiencing problems with online activation, then you can activate Mathematica manually.

Step 2: Enter the activation key and password
You can receive your password in one of two ways. In either case, you will need your activation key and Math ID number.
The first option is to contact Wolfram Research. Contact information can be found by clicking the 'Wolfram Research' link.
The second way is to use the Wolfram User Portal to generate a password. This is accessed when you click on the link 'online password generator'. Please note that you will need to sign in to the Wolfram User Portal to access this form. If you do not have a Portal account, you may create one on the Sign In page. On the 'Password Generator' form, enter your activation key and Math ID number to generate a password.
Once you have obtained your password, just enter it along with your activation key into the Wolfram Product Activation dialog to activate Mathematica. Upon successful activation, Mathematica will launch.
If your license is obtained from MathLM 11, use this method for activation. MathLM 11 must be installed on the license server and activated before client machines with Mathematica can be activated. Please see 'Installing MathLM' for more information.

Installing Mathematica 11 for Windows and Mac Operating Systems

  • This document details the instructions on how to install Mathematica 11 for Windows and Mac.
  • Mathematica is a computational software program used in many scientific, engineering, mathematical and computing fields, based on symbolic mathematics. This program is licensed for installation on any UW-owned device, as well as any device owned by currently employed UW-Madison faculty and staff and currently enrolled students. Use on personally owned machines must cease when the faculty, staff, or student is no longer affiliated with the University.
  • At least 14GB of hard drive space free and available to use.
  • At least 2GB of RAM.
  • Windows, Mac, or Linux Operating System.
    • Windows - 7, 8, and 10 are supported.
    • Mac - OSX 10.9 (Mavericks), OSX 10.10 (Yosemite), OSX 10.11 (El Capitan), and macOS 10.12 (Sierra) are supported.
Installation Procedure (Windows)
  1. Start Windows (Boot up the computer).
  2. Locate the 'Mathematica_11.0.0_WIN.zip' file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library. It should look like this:

  4. A window will appear asking where to place the extracted files. Simply extract them in the same location as the initial zip file (which should be the location by default), and then click extract.
  5. Once the extraction process is complete, locate the folder that was created from the extraction. It should have the same name as the original zip file (except it is now a folder), and should look like this:

  6. Open this folder and then double click on the 'setup.exe' file.
  7. A security warning window may pop up, as well as a user account control window. Click on the 'Run' and 'Yes' buttons for each of these windows in order to launch the installer.

  8. The Wolfram Mathematica Setup Guide should now appear. Click the next button to begin the installation.

  9. Leave the destination location field as it is by default, and then click the next button.

  10. Choose the 'Install all components' option from the dropdown menu, and then click the next button.

  11. Leave the Start Menu Folder location as it is by default, and then click the next button.

  12. Finally, click the install button in initialize the actual installation of the program.

  13. Once the installation is complete, you will be shown the following window:

  14. Click the finish button to complete the installation, and ensure that the Launch Wolfram Mathematica box is checked. The installation of the Wolfram Mathematica application is now complete. The final step in the process is then to properly activate the program with a license key (Follow instructions at the bottom of this page) using the 'Activate online' option inside of the Mathematica program.
Installation Procedure (Mac)
  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Locate the 'Mathematica_11.0.0_OSX.dmg' file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library. It should look like this:

  4. From this window, drag the Mathematica.app icon (on the left) to the Applications folder to the right of it.
    • Note: If you would like install the browser plugin and wolframscript, double click on the Extras.pkg file on the right as well.
  5. Once the Mathematica.app program has finished copying over to the Applications folder, the program should then be successfully installed on your computer.
  6. Now, the last step in the setup process is to activate the Mathematica program with an activation key. In order to find the place to enter the activation key, you need to open up the Mathematica program for the first time. To do this, go to the Applications folder on your Mac (which can be found by opening up a finder window and clicking on 'Applications') and double click on Mathematica.

  7. This should bring up a window that looks like the one below. This is where the activation key should be entered.

  8. Now, to get the activation key, follow the procedure below.
Procedure for Finding the Activation Key and Activating the Program
  1. In order to get the activation key, it must be requested from Wolfram Alpha through their activation key request form.
  2. For Students, that form can be filled out here.
  3. For Faculty & Staff, that form can be filled out here.
  4. Once you have submitted the activation key request form, you will receive an email with the activation key within 5 minutes or so. Copy and paste that key into the 'Activate online' option for activation in the Mathematica program, and you're program should be activated and ready to be used.
